Walter Penrose

February 5, 2010  7:15 pm to 9:00 pm

Prof. Walter Penrose (SDSU) will present “Is There an Archaeology of the Amazons?   Legends, Pots, Graves, and Bones,” on Friday, February 5, 2010 at 7:15-9:00PM at Mesa College room G101.  The existence of the Amazons is one of the most controversial topics today in Ancient History.  While literary scholars have vehemently denied the existence of the women warriors, archaeologists have unearthed graves of women buried with weapons in the Ukraine and Southern Russia, exactly where Herodotus placed the descendants of the Amazons, the Sauromatians.   By comparing archaeological evidence, artistic renderings, and rarely-used ancient Greek texts, Dr. Penrose will put forth a new theory on the ancient Greek understanding of the Amazons.
