April 23, 2010  7:15 pm to 9:15 pm

Prof. Kathryn McDonnell (UCLA) will speak at Mesa College on April 23, 2010.  A Tomb of One’s Own: Heterarchy, Hierarchy, and Roman Tombs focuses on the choices made by the commissioners of Roman tombs at three sites, Pompeii, Isola Sacra, and Aquileia in order to examine individual and collective identities in Roman cemeteries and our own understanding of the transmission of cultural norms. Did Roman tomb builders simply ape the choices of their social betters, such as the emperor, or did they choose tombs that expressed their own aspirations and emotions?
